The Meishan (Chinese: 梅山猪) is a Chinese breed of domestic pig. It is named for Meishan County in Jiangsu Province. [1][2] It is a sub-group of the Taihu and is a small- to medium-sized pig with large drooping ears and wrinkled black skin.

Meishan pigs come from the region of lakes and valleys in China. They are considered Taihu pigs, deriving their name from the Taihu Lake in their region of origin.

Meishan pigs originated in the Taihu Lake region of China. They were domesticated over 5,000 years ago. Prized in China and Japan for their marbled meat and superior lard and fat quality. There are very few pure Meishans in the world today. It is estimated that less than 2,000 verifiably pure Meishans exist worldwide.

Meishan pigs are part of the Taihu group of Chinese pigs (so named for the lake in that area) . The Chinese have been selectively breeding domestic swine in this region for over 5000 years. It is truly a heritage pig, if not one of the oldest domesticated breeds of pigs in the world.
